John Slattery, Pete Neils, Tom Angsten, Liz Ethington, and Charlie Smart
In the summer of 2006, central Wisconsin recording artist and teacher
Kenn Fox found himself surrounded by a wealth of great talent, all of
which happened to be longtime students. Fox began formulating original
compositions with each of these students and rehearsing the material
in weekly lessons at the Waukesha County Conservatory of Music in Hartland,
in preparation for this project.
With ten students in tow ranging in
age from 12 to 45, Fox and another longtime student and business partner
Tim Angsten (Green Flash Society, Hello Hello) headed for the recording
studio. All of the ten original compositions on this collection were
co-written, arranged and recorded by Fox and each of these students.
With the exception of one, none of the participating ten students had
ever had any recording experience before.
All of the fundamental tracks
in this collection were recorded live. Other area professional musicians,
bassist Dave Finley (Mare Edstrom Band) and banjo player Jon Peik (Nob
Hill Boys) also lent a hand. The result, Pullin’ Strings, to
be released Nov. 1st by Spiritone, features ten original instrumental compositions ranging in
style from blues to rock, gypsy swing, jazz, and contemporary fingerstyle.
This collection showcases these ten guitarists and presents the listener
with a fun-filled journey of guitar sounds. The recording also features
Tim Angsten on drums and his brother Tom Angsten on bass. The project
was engineered by Tim Angsten and mixed by another Wisconsin native,
recording engineer, Vinny Millevolte. The extraordinary cover art was
designed by renowned German graphic artist, Dominik Jacky.
Pullin’
Strings is available at Hartland Music Center, the Exclusive Company
