Malakai was born June 3rd of this year with complex congenital heart disease, which requires multiple surgeries and specialized medical care. He had his first open heart surgeries in June, just four days after his birth. His second open heart surgery and removal of the shunt will be done in November, and the third will follow when he is approximately two years old. The situation has been complicated by the tragic death of Malakais first UW pediatric heart surgeon, Dr. Hani Hennein, two days after another minor surgery to clear out an infection. Malakais extensive ICU hospital stays have already resulted in enormous medical bills. Other expenses include substantial copays for rental of oxygen-monitoring and other equipment, numerous prescriptions, and special immunity-building vaccines. The family has additional out-of-pocket expenses for pre-digested formula (three times the cost of regular formula) and gas for weekly or more trips to Madison, along with the typical costs of diapers, etc. Donations for the silent auction and bake sale will be accepted at any time, and cash donations are also accepted (see left and right sidebars). |
